This course introduces doctoral students to ethical issues in the sciences, emphasizing that ethical integrity is not only a matter of abstract principles, but also something enacted and embodied in practice. Drawing on concepts from performance studies, the course highlights ethics as both in performance—embedded in professional, social, and technical practices—and through performance—shaped by repeated acts of communication, collaboration, and decision making where positionality plays a crucial role. Students receive a general introduction to ethics and its role in the sciences through lectures and group discussions about exemplary discipline-specific problems of ethics, emphasizing discourse as a performative practice. In addition, they take part in practical collective workshops involving physical movement and verbal exchanges inspired by performance art practices and then reflect upon the ethical topics brought to the foreground through the practice.
